Grading:  Regular grades are awarded for this course: A B C D E.

May be convened with:  MUS 510A/B.

Course Process

Throughout the semester, the student will research and present writings in current periodical format that will cover topics including respiration, embouchure, alignment/position, articulation, and teaching techniques.  These writings will be shared with classmates and discussed during the class meeting.

Outcomes

The student will have a thorough knowledge of the concepts of flute playing in current practice and throughout history.  These concepts will include respiration, embouchure, position–alignment, finger motion, and articulation.

The student will have an understanding of the acoustic and aerodynamic properties of the flute and the specific pedagogy that must be applied to performing and teaching this instrument. Instruction will be discussed with particular emphasis placed upon the semantics of flute teaching.

The student will gain understanding of the intonation tendencies of the flute, with specific consideration of the instrumentŐs scale construction, and its effect upon the flute section.  A discussion of the piccolo, regarding performer embouchure requirements and pitch perception, will consider the instrumentŐs impact upon ensemble intonation and sonority.

The student will understand psychoacoustic perceptive differences between the performer, instructor, student, and audience.

Throughout the studentŐs research, he/she will gain a thorough understanding of the location and availability of referenced materials in the modern university library.  This will include the location of music scores (M), music literature (ML), and music texts (MT).

Required Materials

All materials will be made available via the School of Music Library or from the instructor directly.
